Finally, Do Nothing? Yes, for now. Nothing on your calendar isn’t a crisis. It’s the most open time you’ve had in decades.

Sound familiar?

You did retirement right. So why does it feel this way?

None of it means you got retirement wrong. It means you’re in the transition. This book is a guide for the middle of it.

  • “Monday feels like Saturday, and Saturday feels like nothing in particular.”
  • “I miss the people more than the work.”
  • “Someone asks what I do now, and I don’t have an easy answer.”
  • “I’m grateful for the freedom, and quietly unsettled by it.”

About the book

A guide for the open calendar

The title asks a real question. After decades of full calendars, is doing nothing allowed? For a while, yes. Doing nothing, on purpose, is the surprising first step.

Retirement: Finally, Do Nothing? helps you take stock of what work supplied, give yourself room to pause, and try small ways to shape life after work. Stuart Asakawa draws on his own transitions and established ideas about change to guide reflection, connection, and everyday meaning.

Use the exercises to choose one next step, make a plan for the people you want in your life, and build a week you can adjust as you learn.

What you’ll do inside

Three moves through the transition

30 short chapters, each closing with a “For Further Thought” reflection. Read a chapter with your morning coffee and try the exercise that day.

  1. Take stock

Name what work quietly supplied: structure, people, purpose, a sense of who you are. It’s hard to replace what you haven’t named.

  2. Pause on purpose

Give yourself room before you fill the calendar. The pause is part of the transition, and it tells you what you actually want next.

  3. Try small things

Run small, low-stakes experiments to see what fits. Keep what works, drop what doesn’t, and adjust as you learn.

You’ll finish with

  • One next step you chose yourself, small enough to start this week.
  • A plan for the people you want in your life now that the office isn’t supplying them.
  • A week you can adjust as you learn what gives your days meaning.

Build a week you can adjust

Not a schedule to fill. A sketch you revise.

The goal isn’t a packed calendar. It’s a few anchors that matter to you, with room left over to notice what else you want.

About the author

Lived it, then mapped it.

Stuart Asakawa holds engineering degrees from UC Berkeley and Stanford and spent more than two decades as a technology and business manager at Hewlett-Packard before retiring at 55. The planning went fine. The open calendar was the surprise.

He navigated that transition himself, then distilled the best thinking on change, from William Bridges, Bruce Feiler, Richard Leider, and the Japanese idea of ikigai, into simple exercises you can actually do. He founded Fresh Beaches to help people through life’s transitions, one calm step at a time.
